Bevan-Calvert-300x256PinOz handballer Bevan Calvert spearheaded SV Mecklenburg Scherwin’s tight win over OHV Aurich, 23-19, to cement his team’s standing in Germany’s third division Bundesliga recently.

Fresh from being voted ‘Player of the Month’ by Scherwin fans, portsider Calvert scored five goals, significant in that it was Scherwin’s last home-game and the penultimate match of the season.

At one point in the closing stages of the game, Schwerin was down by one man from a two-minute suspension. So its goalkeeper left his position for fill the gap.

This put great risk of an unguarded goal.

A shot at Aurich’s goal rebounded off the goalkeeper, leaving the loose ball to be picked up by an Aurich player in defence who countered with a long shot at Scherwin’s goal.

It was Calvert who beat the ball in flight and palmed it safely over the bar. He wasn’t finished yet, however.

Shortly after, the PinOz made a spectacular intercept, raced for the Aurich goal and slammed his fifth into the net.

The win saved Schwerin from the risk of relegation to a lower division of the competition.

In an earlier game against Oranienburg, Calvert scored four goals – two from the field and two from 7 metres – helping Scherwin snatch victory by one goal, 23-22.
