It was a daunting only-caddy-can-putt competition for every golfer-caddy team.
Close on champions’ heels were golfer Martin ‘Kelly’ Pimentel with a nett 59 from a gross 71 strokes off a handicap 12, taking the runner-up trophy with putting partner Marilie Bomediano-Eftekharhashroudi.
Nearest-the-pin winners were Carlos Perez (hole 3), Ferdi Framcisco (hole 5) Patrick Loo (hole 10) and Jun de la Peña (hole 17) These winners received Christmas CDs and golf balls courtesy of the event organizer Ric de Vera.
Pimentel also won the longest-drive trophy at hole 13 with a powerful 225-metre drive onto the middle of the fairway.
The competition raised another $230, and with last year’s $200 the cash went to the International Federation of Journalists’ (IFJ) fund to help bring justice to victims of the 2009 Mindanao massacre.
Shortly after the competition, Filipino Press Group of Sydney members Ric de Veera and Marilie Bomediano-Eftekharhashtroudi formally presented an envelope the $430 to IFJ Asia-Pacific acting director Jane Worthington at the Redfern offices of Media Entertainment Alliance of Australia.
The competition was followed by a sumptuous lunch at Sizzling Fillo nearby.
The fun-golf tournament used a scoring system that allowed a member of the media as caddy-putter to make the difference in the game. It has been the only golf tournament of the Filipino-Australian golfing community in Sydney with no cash prizes.
Major sponsor was the Grace Hotel (Sydney). Other sponsors were Reliable Consultancy Services, Sizzling Fillo, Revesby Press, PinOzInPlay, Ang Kalatas, Bayanihan News, Radio Dalisay, Radio Rizal, and Radio Adhika.
